What Is Mental Health?
Mental health encompasses all the aspects of a person's well-being, including their emotional and psychological states. It is an extremely important aspect of a person's life that can affect their functionality in society. Many issues in a person's mental health can arise due to many sources. These issues include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, personality disorders, PTSD, and many others.
Effects of Exercise on Mental Health
Studies have suggested that physical activity may have major benefits for various mental health issues. There is increasing evidence that "an association between regular physical activity engagement and a reduction in depressive symptomatology" exists (Patel, Keogh, Kolt, & Schofield, 2013). Regular exercise can have both short term and long term effects. Immediately after exercise, a person feels happier and generally in a better mood. If constant exercise is done, long term effects may develop. This could potentially lead to lessening of symptoms for various mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
